Making connections- Kathha Petti 1
Watch / hear my rendering here :
Rendering an act of cognition.
Observations -
As I was rendering the story a few things happened which I was acutely aware of -
- I told a folktale and based on prior experience I ‘knew’ that a folktale could have elements of myth like talking animals, goddesses, etc. This knowing was embodied and my choice of props was directed by this knowing. I didn’t take too long to choose my props either.
- After I chose my props my mind was making connections between the props even as I narrate the story. The act of building these connections was a thinking process occurring ‘under' the main thoughts. I was able to do both - render a story and plan my next move.
- I was taking visual cues from my props and building depth and personality to my characters even as I told the story. Visual elements from Kathha Petti, allowed for narratives to be drawn together and simple modifications were possible.
- At the middle of my storytelling, I was reminded that my limit was 2 characters and I had created more than 2, the farmer, his 8 kids, and the hungry animals. Now the Earth Goddess had to be planned differently, so I told the story in a way that the Earth Goddess has no dialogues, she was a silent vision. And added the moral as a booming voice and not an exchange as between her and the farmer. I even made sure that the kids speak very little in the latter part of the story. This entire exercise of problem-solving and developing alternative narratives happened on the fly as the story was being rendered.
- My story followed an arc a) the setting — establishing the life of the farmer b) the journey — where the farmer is undertaking a challenge and is faced by a call to heroism c)the landing — where the journey finds closure.
