Objective:
What are the core emotions experienced during making with varied materials? What has years of making done to 'you' as a person? Why is making/ creative forays important to humans?

Notes on Preparation:

1) Where did your journey begin?
2) What are your first meanderings into making?
3) What does making do to you? What are your innermost emotions?
4) What do your hands mean to you?
5) How did you develop a style? Is your style synonymous with you 'the person'?
6) Can you name the emotions that you experience while you make or are they subliminal changes in the body?
7) Why should we encourage making? Is it for everyone? Can everyone feel the same way about it?
8) When did making become divorced from our daily functioning? As humans isn't that our 'primary occupation' as we are always in touch with our hands?

Discussion:
Vishakha Chanchani is a seasoned maker. She began her journey as an art educator and continues to dabble in many creative roles. But through our conversation, I gathered that Making is one of the subsects of her many life experiences. The deep body memory accumulated from one's surroundings, sensorial experience of childhood and rather nondescript everyday happenings lend to the building of aesthetics and a keen artistic eye. This sort of a 'human experience laboratory' results in the awakening of mindfulness and creative synergy. Vaishakas deep body memories transcend places, people, and material, finally resting in her inner being and shaping her artistic practice and life. Leading me to the question, if all that my pedagogy needs to do is provide the experience and stimulus which the individual will act on when they are ready.

 Engrossed in conversation.
Miniatures in clay. Some of Vishakha's painstakingly created art.
Action:

I tried the technique of Interviewing with Empathy. I immersed in the stories and memories that Vishakha carried with her due to the sheer scale of her work. I went with a Beginners Attitude, dropping all biases, willing to listen to her extreme viewpoints on her dissidence with technology to her case against 'art' and 'craft' being divorced.

Puppets and stories for every occasion!
