Meeting the Beautician Mang
Objective:
What are the core emotions experienced during using your hands on other human beings? How do your hands ready you for other sensations? How is sensorial awareness built with experience?
Notes on Preparation:
1) How does body awareness play a role in your job?
2) How are you aware of both your and a clients body using your hands?
3) Are your hands the most used part of your body in your job, or do you use the mind too?
4) How have you worked on building a relationship with your hands?
5) What challenges do you face due to the sensorial element in your job?
Discussion:
Mang has been a beautician for years now she spoke to me about her journey as a beauty therapist and how her hands are crucial to all the services she offers. She was quick to point out that her hands listen to her mind and that she needs to be constantly aware of how the client is feeling to gauge her reflexes, physical movements accordingly. Her job is one of deep self-awareness as it involves another human being.
Action:
It was crucial to have an interview where Mang doesn't blindly validate my questions. I noticed that she had not given so much thought to how her hands play a crucial role in her work, till we revisited the question multiple times. I used a normal interview technique with lots of conversation to make her comfortable with the idea.
